How to Choose the Right Trash Can for You
Share article
A kitchen trash can isn’t a glamorous purchase, we’ll admit it. But the right one can make a massive difference to your daily life.
Discover our waste bin range
Our range of trash cans offer large capacities in smaller footprints, because we know that floor space is precious in the home. Each of our household trash cans boast special features, whether that’s offering separate compartments in one tidy tower (Totem); the ability to compress rubbish to help reduce trips to the dumpster (Titan); or trash cans which handily store their own liners (Arc™).
Most of the trash cans we offer feature integrated odor control via our activated carbon filters which do a great job at absorbing unpleasant odors, helping to keep your kitchen smelling fresh. Let’s break it down.
Totem - separate compartments for waste and recycling
Trash cans with compartments make for easier emptying on trash day, and mean you don’t have to have more than one container for waste and recycling. The Totem range handles household trash, recycling and food scraps in one tall tower. The different sections make for efficient waste management and a trash can that’s easy to keep clean, as all the inner compartments can be easily sanitized and wiped down once emptied (there are no bottomless, cavernous buckets to try to scrub here).
How does a trash can that doesn’t need constant emptying sound? Titan’s integrated compactor helps you fit more waste in one trash bag, reducing the frequency of trips to the dumpster. The built-in waste compactor also means you get the most out of every trash bag. Using fewer bags is good for both your wallet and the environment.
Titan stores 30L of waste in one compartment, and is operated by a foot pedal which makes it a hygienic option during kitchen prep.
💡Tip:
One of the most important things when choosing the size of trash can for your kitchen is that you measure the space where you’ll be placing it. Always check that the width and depth of your chosen trash can will fit in your space (all dimensions are provided on our product pages).
If you’re looking for a streamlined waste solution, consider Arc™, which has a pedal within the body of the trash can itself. It boasts a handy pocket which stores replacement garbage bags at the back of the trash can, so that you always have bags on hand when you need them most. Arc™ stores 30L of waste, and is also available in a smaller 10L format. Foot pedals are especially handy when you’re in the middle of a messy kitchen task and don’t want to use your hands to open the bin. The lid is soft-close for a satisfying and smooth experience.
💡Tip:
Food waste caddies (or kitchen compost bins) are a great addition to busy kitchens. These are ideally placed on a counter top as you work, so you can keep your worktops free of detritus and clutter as you cook. Post-meal, it’s a good idea to move your kitchen compost bin near your dishwasher for easy waste disposal as you load.
Our food waste caddies are easy-to-fill and are designed to reduce mess during meal prep, keeping your kitchen clean and tidy. Collect™ is made of stainless-steel which is a durable material as well as a good one for blocking out smells. It has an integrated odor filter, which hides discreetly on the underside of the compost bin lid.
This compost bin’s wide opening means you can scrape food waste directly off your plate, and the removable inner bucket makes it easy to empty.
Bathroom trash cans are traditionally clunky and don’t offer much capacity. Our EasyStore™ range offers a 5L capacity in a footprint that is shaped so that it can fit neatly and discretely into corners or under sinks without becoming obtrusive. Like Arc™, EasyStore™ also features a removable inner bucket and has a pocket at the back to store trash bags, so that the process of emptying your bathroom trash can is quick and hassle free. 💡Tip:
Choosing the material and color of your trash can is a big decision. It’s best to go with a material that’s easy to clean and a shade that blends in well with your kitchen. Stone or stainless-steel work well for lighter color schemes while matt black and gray options fit in well in darker colored kitchens.
FAQs about choosing the best trash can for you
How do I know what trash can capacity I may need?
Finding the best kitchen trash can for your space starts with understanding the capacity you require. The size you need will depend on the size of your household and how often you cook. Trash can sizing is measured in litres (L) starting from around 4L for a kitchen compost caddy, up to 60L for our largest trash can.
Where should I place my kitchen trash can?
A general household trash can is best-placed in a location that’s easy to access and close to where you do most of your food prep. The benefit of freestanding trash cans is that they are not limited by cabinetry that house them and are often easier to access. If your trash can allows for waste separation like the Totem, positioning it in an easy-reach location at the end of a counter or in a corner offers the easiest access.
